Analyst: 60-inch Apple iTV to launch this year

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's no secret that Apple wants to get into the living room by making its own TV set, and there have been plenty of rumors and reports about how and when it's going to happen.

Now, an analyst says he's learned that the set will go on sale late this year, for $1,500 to $2,500.

In a research note Wednesday, Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets says the "iTV" will be 60 inches on the diagonal, but could also come in 50- and 55-inch versions. Apple will also release a small "iRing" that fits on the viewer's finger, allowing the user to control the screen by pointing, White says.

The report is based on gleanings from visits with Chinese and Taiwanese companies that supply Apple with components, White says.

Telefonica receives $257 million credit line for Blackberry phones

MADRID (Reuters) - Telefonica, Europe's biggest telecoms operator by revenue, has received a 200 million euro ($257 million) financing facility from the Canadian export agency to buy BlackBerry smartphones and services.

Export Development Canada (EDC) said the credit line to Telefonica would be used to provide BlackBerry products and services across Telefonica's international operations.

Telefonica operates in more than a dozen fast-growing Latin American markets as well as its depressed home market of Spain and other European markets.

BlackBerry's iconic devices, often used by business people, once dominated the smartphone market. But in recent years the company has suffered as phones powered by Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems have eaten away at its market share across the globe.

Government export credit agencies tend to support big deals that involve exports to emerging economies and provide a boost to local manufacturing. EDC provided financing for Telefonica to buy equipment from BlackBerry as well as other suppliers in 2006.

Telefonica secured a $1 billion credit line from Sweden's export agencies last month to buy infrastructure from Ericsson.

"EDC's financing is really about making the transactions between BlackBerry and Telefonica easier, helping to enhance and broaden the relationship between these two major global players," Lewis Megaw, EDC's regional vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said in a statement.

In a bid to reinvent itself and claw back market share, BlackBerry launched a wholly re-engineered new line of devices powered by its new BlackBerry 10 operating system this year.

The first of these, a touchscreen device dubbed the Z10, is already on sale in over 25 countries across the globe. A new device with BlackBerry's traditional physical keypad is set to begin hitting store shelves later this month.

Most Asian stock markets up, but Nikkei falls

BANGKOK (AP) ? A slowdown in U.S. factory activity kept gains modest in Asian stock markets Tuesday, while Japan's Nikkei slipped as the yen rose against the dollar.

U.S. manufacturing expanded more slowly in March than February, the Institute for Supply Management said Monday, held back by weaker growth in production and new orders. Still, sentiment remained fairly resilient following the release Monday of reports showing that manufacturing picked up in China and that business sentiment improved in Japan last month.

Analysts said the new government in Japan, with its new plan of attack to right the Japanese economy, has lifted business optimism.

"The economy is improving, albeit slowly, and the mood has been lifted by the assertive and coordinated economic plan of the new government," Moody's Analytics said in a market commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.2 percent to 12,107.40, giving up recent gains that were partly due to the yen's drop in value against other major currencies. A weaker currency makes products sold abroad more expensive, a hardship for Japan's export-dependent economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.4 percent to 22,384.26. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.2 percent to 4,975.40. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.1 percent at 1,997.10. Benchmarks in mainland China and Singapore rose while Malaysia, the Philippines and New Zealand fell.

Wall Street stocks got off to a slow start Monday following a three-day holiday. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped less than 0.1 percent to close at 14,572.85. The S&P 500 fell 0.5 percent to close at 1,562.17. The Nasdaq composite index fell 0.9 percent to 3,239.17.

Benchmark oil for May delivery was down 17 cents to $96.89 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 16 cents to close at $97.07 a barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2867 from $1.2804 late Monday in New York. The dollar fell to 93.03 yen from 94.22 yen.

Almost since its inception, modern reality television has been plagued by tragedy.

In recent weeks, three people linked to hit series have died. "Buckwild" star Shain Gandee died April 1, the same day Thierry Costa, staff physician for the French version of "Survivor," killed himself. In his suicide note, Costa said "unjust accusations and assumptions" about his medical treatment of contestant Gerald Babin, who suffered a fatal heart attack on the first day of filming, harmed his reputation.

"Survivor" was haunted since its inception. The first contestant voted out of Sweden's "Expedition Robinson," which Mark Burnett adapted for his U.S. "Survivor" franchise, committed suicide weeks after returning home from the Malaysian shoot.?

Dozens of reality stars have passed away in the past few years, but here are nine of the most tragic deaths:

1. Shain Gandee, 'Buckwild'
MTV suspended production of the reality series hours after the body of its 21-year-old star was found, along with his uncle and another man, in his truck in Sissonville, W.Va, April 1. The men died from carbon monoxide poisoning when the Ford Bronco's exhaust pipe became submerged in mud during an off-roading excursion. Gandee and many of his spirited co-stars were filmed "mudding" -- racing and spinning their four-wheelers in the mud -- during the first season of the controversial series, decried by some critics as the "Redneck Jersey Shore."

2. Russell Armstrong, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'
Star?Taylor Armstrong discovered the body of her estranged husband, 47, hanging in the bedroom of his Los Angeles home Aug. 15, 2011 -- weeks before the Bravo series' second-season premiere. The couple's marital problems -- including allegations that Armstrong assaulted his wife -- featured prominently in the series.

3. Mindy McCready, 'Celebrity Rehab'
The troubled country-music singer, who committed suicide in early 2013, became the fifth cast member to die after participating in Dr. Drew Pinsky's VH1 series. But Pinsky, an addiction specialist, said the show is not to blame for the deaths of McCready, Rodney King, Jeff Conaway, Mike Starr and Joey Kovar. "These diseases -- advanced addictions -- have the same prognosis as cancer," he said on "The View." "If you don't participate in treatment in an ongoing fashion, the prognosis is really bad."?

4. Joey Kovar, 'The Real World: Hollywood'
The 29-year-old bodybuilder (who also appeared on "Celebrity Rehab") was found dead of a suspected drug overdose in August 2012. He memorably left the 20th season of MTV's reality hit in the middle of filming to enter a 30-day treatment program for substance abuse and alcoholism.

5. Steve Irwin, 'Crocodile Hunter'
The beloved Australian wildlife expert was fatally wounded?in 2006 while swimming with a stingray during filming in the Great Barrier Reef for another TV show. After the creature pierced him in the chest with its barbed spine, the 44-year-old Australian icon was pronounced dead at the scene.

6. Phil Harris, 'Deadliest Catch'
The 53-year-old salty sea captain suffered a massive stroke aboard his boat, the Cornelia Marie, Jan. 29, 2010, and died on Feb. 9. The Discovery Channel's hit series, which followed the dangerous exploits of crab fishermen, chronicled Harris' last days during its sixth season. The show suffered a second loss a year later when the body of deckhand Justin Tennison, 34, was found in his Alaska hotel room.

7. Rachel Brown, 'Hell's Kitchen'
The 41-year-old aspiring chef died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2007 after appearing on the second season of Gordon Ramsay's cooking contest. Three years later, Joseph Cerniglia, 39, who appeared on the harshly critical celebrity chef's "Kitchen Nightmares," leapt to his death from New York City's George Washington Bridge.

8. Paula Goodspeed, 'American Idol'
The Paula Abdul fan, who performed during "Idol's" Texas auditions in 2005, was found dead in her car from a suspected drug overdose near Abdul's home in November 2008. Goodspeed had legally changed her first name as a tribute to the judge. In addition to personalized license plates reading "ABL LV," a photo of Abdul was found hanging from her car's rearview mirror.

9. Anna Nicole Smith, 'The Anna Nicole Show'
The former Playboy Playmate and octogenarian billionaire's widow died at age 39 on Feb. 8, 2007, from a prescription drug overdose. Just five months earlier, her 20-year-old son, Daniel, died from an accidental overdose -- just days after Smith gave birth to daughter Dannielynn. Her E! reality series, which aired for two seasons in 2002-2003, also featured her attorney boyfriend Howard K. Stern, who lost a paternity dispute with Larry Birkhead over Dannielynn and was prosecuted for conspiracy in obtaining illegal prescriptions for Smith. (His conviction was overturned.)

The Best Things to Buy in April

A full quarter of the year has already gone by, which means stores are slashing prices on winter-centric goods and other seasonal items. Here are the best things to buy this month.

Every month, we look back at the best times to buy anything during the year, and pull out items each month to remind you what's coming. Obviously, none of this is to say you should go on a shopping spree?but if you've been holding off for a lower price on something, these are the things that get the sale treatment in April.

All Spring

• Televisions and Other Electronics: The Japanese fiscal year ends in March, which means Japanese-made goods?like the electronics we all love so much?are going to be on sale as they try to get rid of old stock. If you didn't grab a TV during the pre-Super Bowl sales, now's the time to grab one. Author Mark Di Vincenzo notes that these sales are probably even better than the February ones anyway, as long as you're comfortable buying last year's model.
• Houses: According to Bankrate, spring is a great time to buy a house. Prices aren't quite as low as they can be in the winter, but you'll have a much larger selection to choose from, so you can take the time to find your perfect dream home. The spring weather makes the yards look great, and everyone comes out of the woodwork looking for a new home, which makes competition fierce. A lot of families start buying and selling at this time so their kids have time to make the transition during summer vacation, too.
• Cookware & Kitchen Accessories: As graduation season draws closer, you'll see a lot of sales for common graduation gifts. Kitchen tools and cookware are at the top of the list, says Bankrate, so even if you aren't heading off to college next year, take advantage of the graduation-centric sales to stock up on any must-have kitchen tools now.
• Digital Cameras: CES has come and gone, and while last year's digital cameras start going on sale in February, you're probably going to find the best deals during the second quarter of the year, according to Digital Photography School and Digital Camera HQ. Not sure what camera you want? Check out our Hive Five for DSLR and mirrorless 4/3 cameras.
• Thrift Items: It's spring cleaning time, which means you can not only sell all your old junk, but buy other people's junk too! If you're a thrift store shopper, now's a good time to get even better bargains than usual, since places like the Salvation Army will be getting lots of new inventory.
• Vacuum Cleaners: Speaking of spring cleaning, if your vacuum just doesn't have the sucking power that it used to, it's the perfect time to buy a new one. New vacuums usually don't come out until June, so Bankrate says you should grab the old models now as they're clearing them out (though if you can wait, Dealnews says Black Friday will see the lowest prices).

April

• Cruises: April isn't a traditional vacation month, so things like cruises are going to be a bit cheaper, says Dealnews. If you can get the time off from work, now's a great time to take a vacation. And, if cruises aren't your thing, you an always plan an awesome, last-minute vacation on the cheap, too.
• Sneakers: If you fell off the workout wagon this winter, it's time to get back on that horse and start a new health and fitness routine. Since most of the less serious runners start exercising again in April, TIME says you're likely to find some pretty good sales at your local running store.

Michael Jurewitz and Brad Ellis' talks from ?ingleton Deux now on video

While all of the presentation at ?ingleton Deux were fantastic, among those that stood out and resonated with me were former Apple developer evangelist Michael Jurewitz's talk on App Store economics, and Pacific Helm designer Brad Ellis' talk on color. I was privileged to watch them both live at ?2, and here's what I wrote at the time:

Michael Jurewitz, formerly an evangelist at Apple and currently a director at Black Pixel kicked things off with a look inside the App Store -- how to work with Apple and how to value your work. He explained that developers shouldn't see their relationship with Apple as one of equals, but likened it more to animal husbandry. One of the best things in the world for a developer is to get featured on the App Store and the way to increase your odds of that is to embrace iOS and OS X's newest features as quickly as possible in a way that delights users and brings value to the platform. He also, bluntly, told developers that while there are issues with the App Store -- like no trials or paid upgrades, sandboxing, Gate Keeper, etc. -- that they need to get used to it and deal with it, because that's the world they currently live in. He also told developers not to undercharge for that apps, and asked them if doubling their price would cost them less than half their user base, because if it does, it's ultimately more money. And an un-successful app is a dead app, for developers and users.

Jury, who just returned to work at Apple this week, just finished posting over a half-dozen articles on the subject of app pricing. All of them are well worth reading, and help round out the video, and can be found at his personal blog jury.me.

Brad Ellis of Pacific Helm talked about what it means to be a designer, both in terms of the different skill sets possessed by visual, product, interface, and other types of designers, and in terms of the perceptions towards designers and design in general. Using a flabbergastingly awesome Quartz Composer program, he then went through an example of using math to solve a design problem, namely a navigation bar that had to look great no matter the color or platform it's deployed on. Combining formulae for waited average to flip text color from black to white depending on the background with an explanation of blend modes, he explained how to avoid having him make fun of your desaturated interfaces by properly using color burn and linear burn.
