No darkness at all

A Christian Science perspective.

By The editors of the Christian Science Sentinel / August 30, 2012

A leading point that Christian Science sets forth for the world is the fact there is not a presence or force that exists besides God. All that genuinely is in existence is God and God?s action, or outcome. ?Know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the Lord, and there is none else,? says the Bible (Isaiah 45:6).

Darkness isn?t a substance or element in addition to light; it?s always simply the absence of light. In any room, there aren?t two switches on the wall ? a light switch and also a ?dark? switch. We can?t walk into a bright room with sunshine streaming through the windows and then switch on the dark!

Could it be said that evil, like darkness, has no tangible substance? Whether it appears as selfishness, hatred, illness, injustice, sin, or injury, it actually is a belief in God?s absence ? a false mental impression of God?s nonexistence. The divine Truth and Love that is God is inextinguishable; uncontested. Truth illuminates human consciousness, effectively freeing us from a false belief in the darkness of evil. ?Truth and Love enlighten the understanding, in whose ?light shall we see light;? and this illumination is reflected spiritually by all who walk in the light and turn away from a false material sense,? explains the Monitor?s founder, Mary Baker Eddy (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 510).

We don?t need to switch on the light of spiritual reality; in prayer, we mentally open up to it. The Bible states simply, ?God is light, and in him is no darkness at all? (I John 1:5). That?s right: No darkness at all! And God is ever present, all there is.

The sun shines from one direction because it is in a single place. God, however, shines from every direction at the same time. God isn?t localized; Truth and Love are everywhere. God shines with intelligence from every location and from every viewpoint and direction. The darkness we call fear, ignorance, or hate, then couldn?t ever have any place in the light of God. With joy, we walk in this serene light and are conscious of its glow in our thoughts throughout the big and little moments of our day.

The illuminating power of divine Truth is always here, not to convert things from bad to good, but simply to reveal what is real. That?s what light does ? it merely makes known what is already happening, what is present and true. And what is true and real is God. What is real is God?s magnificent creation and expression. That which is unreal needs no repair or conversion. What the light of divine Truth reveals to you each moment is the harmony of heaven, here and now, including your intact existence in it as a child of God.

No one is excluded from the benefit of this all-present, inextinguishable light. It is shining unimpeded in every corner of the universe and in every corner of thought. It reaches human consciousness to illumine the way even amid what seems the blackest darkness. You are naturally receptive to the light. It is always there for you, without variation. In fact, the Bible joyfully speaks about God as ?the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning? (James 1:17).

This light, this beautiful intelligence of Love, is spiritual and is reflected by you and everyone. We don?t ever have to switch off the dark. The light of God is the only thing present, and it?s all that ever will be present. Even in those specific locations or circumstances that would give you the impression of being inhabited by the most insidious evil, all that is present is the authority of God, gleaming radiantly and surely. All is the connected wholeness of ?the Father of lights? and His manifestation.

Private and Public Digital Evidence and Forensic Investigation | PJL ...

This article discusses the specific sub-field of digital forensics and the types of crimes that would need digital forensics for an investigation.

Digital Forensics

This sub-field of forensics examines data and information from computer storage media so that it may be used as evidence in a court of law or to answer a specific legal question as it may need.

For example in private investigations, digital forensics investigator may use digital forensics at the request of a private attorney for a defendant in a public case. And evidence may be gathered to prove that an employee is using company resources for personal private business use such as selling goods online or visiting the site that is against the company rules and regulation about Information technology. In this case, the employee may be subject to disciplinary action by the company, more personal liability, and perhaps criminal liability.

More so, evidence that proves an employee has violated an employment agreement. For example, evidence may be gathered that proves an employee accessed records or other information without authorization. It may also give that one employee has harassed another employee or perhaps stolen company information.

While public investigations require digital forensics only when a crime has been committed and computers can be used in crimes in one of the following ways, such as, Crimes associated with the prevalence of computers i.e. copyright violations, crimes in which computer is the instrument of the crime or crime in which computer are incidental to another crime such as using it to store illegal records and crimes in which the computer is the target such as crimes that involve stealing information from a computer or denial of service crimes.

Digital Evidence Collection

The collection of digital evidence may have several prominent roles in collection. These roles may include:

?Physical Technology Collection:

Investigators will collect the physical media. Physical media is any technology that stores data or information. E.g. hard disks, PDAs, flash and other electronic devices.

?Physical Media Analysis:

Investigators will analyze the physical evidence for finger prints or other evidence found on the surfaces of the physical technology. This role requires a deep understanding of the technology and may be able to aid the roles of digital evidence collection and digital evidence analysis even when the physical device is severely damaged.

?Digital Evidence Collection:

Investigators will collect the digital data from the physical device. Here, the evidence is the full set of files, folders, and bits stored on the physical media.

?Digital Evidence Analysis:

Investigators will analyze the data collected. Analysis of digital evidence may show hidden information.

Digital Evidence

Digital evidence is both the full set of bits, bytes, and blocks retrieved from the technology. It is also any subset of that full set such as e-mail, log files, text documents, spreadsheets, and other files.

Digital evidence has several unique challenges and questions that must be addressed. The highest challenge is found in modern computers which are implanted as multi-user systems with potentially hundreds of users. Since evidence must conclusively show facts in an investigation, it becomes critical to clear up ambiguities of who owns the data, how the data came to be on the system, and who or what originated the data.

Another concern is the legal issues surrounding the collection of evidence from privately owned devices such as cell phones in private investigations as well the expectation of privacy for employees using company provided resources. While no clear answers have emerged, many businesses specify the proper use of their assets and need employees to waive any such rights to privacy on company assets as part of their employment contract.

Furthermore, this issue has recently become more complicated with the onset of free publicly available encryption technologies. This specific question is whether or not a user retains an expectation of privacy by using encryption on company assets. Clearly, the company has the right to the encrypted version of the data; but does the company have the right to mandate the employee offer an unencrypted version? Subsequently, can a person be ordered by a court of law to give a password to law enforcement to decrypt the digital evidence?

One may be tempted to argue that no digital bit has ever been seen, so plain sight is not possible and not an issue. This issue of privacy raises the question of ?plain sight? while collecting evidence from digital sources. Others may argue that a permit to collect any digital evidence stored on a disk or computer device is enough to collect any and all evidence from a computer for any crime.

The plain sight doctrine is best interpreted conservatively so that any seizure of evidence of one crime revealed during the search for evidence for another crime should be then justified by a permit.

Isaac aims at north Gulf Coast after raking Fla.

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac churned toward the northern Gulf Coast early Monday and promised to give the Republican National Convention a good drenching after lashing the Florida Keys and Miami area with wind and rain.

The National Hurricane Center predicted Isaac would grow a Category 2 hurricane over the warm Gulf of Mexico and possibly hit late Tuesday somewhere along a stretch that starts west of New Orleans and runs to the edge of the Florida Panhandle. That would be one day shy of seven years after Hurricane Katrina struck catastrophically in 2005.

A Category 2 hurricane has sustained winds of between 96 and 110 mph (154 to 177 kph) and a strong storm surge. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency, and 53,000 residents of St. Charles Parish near New Orleans were told to leave ahead of the storm.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant and Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley also declared states of emergency, while oil companies began evacuating workers and cutting production at Gulf offshore rigs in Isaac's projected path.

Several area governors have altered their plans for this week's GOP convention in Tampa. Bentley has canceled his trip, and Jindal said he's likely to do so unless the threat from the storm subsides. Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave up a chance to speak.

Even though the storm was moving well west of Tampa, tropical storm-force winds and heavy rains were possible in the area because of Isaac's large size, forecasters said. A small group of protesters braved rainy weather Sunday and vowed to continue despite the weather, which already forced the Republicans to cancel Monday's opening session of the convention. Instead, the GOP will briefly gavel the gathering to order Monday afternoon and then recess until Tuesday.

Tampa Mayor Bill Buckhorn, a Democrat, said the weather would be "squirrely" but predicted the storm would not unduly interfere with the convention.

"We're going to show the world on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday what a great place this is," he said. "As a state and a city, we're going to put on a good show and be a great host for the Republican Party."

As of 2 a.m. EDT Monday, the storm was centered about 110 miles (175 kilometers) west of Key West, Fla., according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph) and was moving west-northwest near 14 mph (22 kph).

Florida, historically the state most prone to hurricanes, has been hurricane-free since it was hit four times each in 2004 and 2005. Isaac will likely prove barely a memory for South Florida and Keys residents, who mostly took the storm in stride as its center passed just south of Key West on Sunday.

"This is routine for us," said Annie Lopez, 47, a lifelong Key West resident. "It's down to a science."

Added Jean Claude Philemy of Miami: "Every year it's almost the same. We can deal with it."

The storm did knock out power temporarily for around 16,000 customers throughout South Florida, and 555 flights were canceled at Miami International Airport. That forced some people to shuffle their travel plans and kept many, at least for a day, from enjoying their beach vacations.

"I have friends who tell me to come in January," said Peter Muller, who was visiting Miami with his family from Germany. They spent part of Sunday at a Miami-area mall. "Maybe they know best."

In the low-lying Keys, isolated patches of flooding were reported and some roads were littered with downed palm fronds and small branches. But officials said damage appeared to be minimal, and many Keys residents held true to their any-excuse-for-a-party reputation.

"The storm was the most fun thing ever!" exclaimed Sergey Jadzevics, who were taking pictures on famed Duval Street in Key West, a fresh bottle of vodka in hand.

"It's not really scary," added Kevin Furcrown, another Key West resident. "It's more of a hassle than anything."

The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region.

Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for eight deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba. It bore down on the Keys two days after the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew, which caused more than $25 billion in damage and killed 26 people in South Florida.

Life Insurance Isn't For You! - Elev8

Question:? Is your family important to you?? If your answer is ?YES?, do you have life insurance?? If your answer is ?NO?, then what is the problem?? If the breadwinner or loved one?in your family is to die too soon, what will your family do to pick up the pieces so that everything doesn?t go to hell in a handbag?? Who is in a position to come up with $10-12,000 to cover final expenses or will you have to do fish fry?s, chicken dinners and car washes to raise the money for your loved one?? What family member of yours is financially equipped to raise your children to the standard that you have them now?? The sad answer to this question is, many people don?t want to hear about it.? They think they have time.? Well, I am here to tell you (in the words of Michael Jackson), ?Time waits for no one?.

Recently, I watched an episode of, ?Keeping Up With the Khardasians? and Kris Jenner was pretty insistent on making sure that the family had their affairs in orders God forbid any of them were to pass away.? I immediately thought to myself, ?I wonder how many people will take action, now that the ??Khardasians? have brought a national awareness to the table?.

Did you know, there are 68 million people who have no life insurance and those who do, many have the wrong type or not enough?? That isn?t coming from a biased perspective because I am a financial service representative with Primerica, that comes from getting out into the community and meeting people across their kitchen table to assess their needs.? What I have found is startling.

Here?s an example:

I recently met with a?single dad of 6 who has $50,000 worth of life insurance for himself and each child is covered for $25,000.? His annual income is $32,000.? He pays $162 per month for all of his coverages.? The minute I looked at his existing policies, I knew he was underinsured.? That little bit of coverage would have lasted those 6 children 1-2 years (if that).? They would have been stuck.? And their caretakers would be left to figure out HOW they were going to manage the lives of 6 minors.? Once I educated this father on the ?rules? and how life insurance works, his eyes were opened.? I was able to help provide him a quote?for $300,000 to ?replace? his income?with a?child rider of $20,000 (you pay for 1 child and it covers up to 10 children)?and I saved him $14 in the process.? That?s right, 6times the amount of coverage for less than what he?s paying now.

I have come to realize that people will insure?their cars because it?s the law, we obtain medical? insurance for our health because we don?t want to be unable to see a doctor if we?re sick, we?ll even buy home owners and renters? insurance because God forbid something happen to our belongings, but many people fail to see the benefit -? the urgency ? of insuring their lives, protecting their income.? And the crazy part is, income protection isn?t for you.? It?s for those you leave behind when God says, ?Well done??

Read: 3 Dangerous IRA Mistakes

So?what is income protection?

  1. Income protection is life insurance.? It?s the opportunity for you to make sure that you have money allocated to replace your income.? In the early years you?ll probably need a lot of? coverage to take care of? your young children, high debt and mortgage, in? the event of death.? Many people need a lot because they don?t have enough money saved.? If there is no income protection in place, guess what, whoever you leave behind has to figure it out.? They?ll have to find a way to make up the difference in income, which usually means either downsizing or getting a second or third job.
  2. Income protection is looking at what you bring in annually and making sure that upon your death, your family still has that amount of money coming in, seeing as how that is the lifestyle you helped create for them.
  3. Income protection is making sure that your family and the community at large are not selling chicken dinners, doing car washes and going door-to-door to make sure that you get buried while your bereaved tries to figure out life after.
  4. Income protection is being responsible to make sure that whoever is left to care for your children (God forbid the parents are to die first), they would have enough to provide them with the quality of life you desire for them and not just assuming that THEY have the resources to take on your children financially.

Read: Social Security Still?A Good Deal?

I love what I do.? I educate families with the truth and 3rd party information.? I make sure you understand how life insurance works.? We don?t just give quotes.? We assess your needs.? If you don?t have it I help you get it and explain HOW it works.?Before I became a client with Primerica, I was in the same position as the gentleman described about?paying too much for too little.? If?the representative (who happened to be my?sorority sister)?hadn?t walked through my front door, there?s no telling what would have happened.

Big up?s to Kris Khardasian for sharing her concern on television.

Until next time,

New Realty Hubs Hold Promise - Real Estate India

??|?? August 25, 2012 ?? 09:51pm ??|Contributed by manoja

Faridabad, Kundli, Sonipat, Manesar and the new locations in Gurgaon are emerging as the hubs for commercial and residential real estate in the NCR

In the last couple of years, Gurgaon emerged as a premium residential and commercial destination in the National Capital Region (NCR).
A number of Fortune 500 companies have opened their offices in Gurgaon owing to its proximity to the airport and availability of a large amount of quality commercial space. Of course, DLF has played an important role in developing the township as a major commercial centre in the country.

Industrial and commercial development, in turn, led to a rise in the demand for residential space. In the last two decades of development, most of the space in old Gurgaon has almost been exhausted. This prompted developers to go further down along National Highway 8 to construct residential and commercial buildings.
The demand for residential units in these areas is so strong from end users and investors that the prices have appreciated by almost 50% in the last one year.

In order to provide quality space, developers are planning to build a slew of integrated townships in the new developing areas. They are taking innovative steps and bringing bestin-class townships, which include facilities and infrastructure like shopping centres, malls, multi-level parking, hospitals, schools, parks and restaurants. The connectivity to national highways and the main city and proximity to the airport are some of the important aspects which are being considered by the various real estate developers ? better the location, higher the price.

Residential property prices on the southern peripheral road connecting to NH-8 have seen a remarkable appreciation over the past few months. This location holds great investment potential due to the enhanced connectivity that NH-8 provides to Manesar and Dwarka. As prices soar in new locations of Gurgaon like Golf Course Extension, Sectors 70 and 78, buyers have been flocking to these alternative locations.

The region is also high in demand, as it lies close to the proposed Delhi Mumbai Industrial corridor (DMIC) and the entire region is expected to have investments aggregating up to $90 billion. The corridor is attracting heavy investments from Japanese, European and American countries. Honda Motors, Asahi Glass, Mobis, Saint Gobain, Harley Davidson, Panasonic and Musasi, etc, have already set up world-class facilities here.
Another area, which is emerging as an alternative destination for real estate development in the region is Pataudi Road. Located at the foothills of the Aravali hills in Gurgaon, Pataudi Road is set to emerge as the next axis of industrial and commercial development. The availability of land parcels for residential and commercial development is one of the main factors driving development in this location.

There is a large influx of wellpaid professionals into Gurgaon every year, which translates into a strong demand for housing in peripheral areas. The demand also comes from people who want a second home, either for spending their weekends, or for renting out.

At the same time, they hope that this could be a good investment, as Gurgaon will expand in the near future. NRIs also account for a large portion of the demand. In several high-end complexes, corporates bought apartments in bulk to house their senior executives. The biggest strength of this area lies in the massive employment opportunity available within a 10-15km radius.

As per the new Gurgaon Manesar Master Plan 2021-25, the availability of land for development has opened up huge possibilities, mainly in the new sectors along Gurgaon-Pataudi Road, slated to emerge as a growth corridor in the near future. A draft development plan for Pataudi town is also being prepared.

The KMP Expressway was the driving force behind the rise of Gurgaon-Pataudi Road as a potential destination for investment as well as a catalyst for projects like Special Economic Zones (SEZs) by Reliance and Rahejas. With the advent of these commercial projects, a number of residential projects have also been launched. Gurgaon-Dwarka Expressway is expected to emerge as a lifeline to Pataudi Road, as it provides a direct link to the IGI airport and will enable a drastic reduction in travel time between Delhi and Gurgaon. With traffic congestions mounting on NH-8 and MG Road, Dwarka Expressway will become the preferred route to Gurgaon.

Vijay Gupta, the CMD of Orris Infrastructures Ltd, which is developing Orris Aster in the region, says: ?Gurgaon-Pataudi Road is coming up as a potential real estate hub because of its proximity to completed, forthcoming and proposed transport links. Our ongoing projects like Orris Aster Court and Orris Carnation Residency are among the largest grouphousing developments in New Gurgaon, which offer a charming blend of contemporary Indian living with the best of modern amenities.?

Besides the NH-8, hectic development is also taking place at Faridabad and Kundli-Sonipat. Faridabad is home to many national and multinational firms. According to the NCR Regional Plan-2021, the city?s population is set to rise to 21.3 lakh by 2021. Keeping this in mind, the Town and Country Planning Department of Haryana has prepared a 20-year development plan for the whole of Faridabad. Huda is acquiring land and developing new sectors in Faridabad for this purpose.

The city will soon be connected to Delhi through the Metro line. According to a DPR (detailed project report) submitted by the DMRC to the Haryana government, the 13.8km Metro line from Badarpur to Faridabad?s YMCA Chowk will be elevated and have nine stations. The Haryana government has approved a budgetary allocation of Rs 1,588 crore for this project.

Neharpar area in Faridabad, spread in different sectors including Sectors 75, 76, 81, 82, 85 and the posh Sectors 14 & 15, has a number of projects by developers like BPTP, Omaxe, SRS, Puri Construction, Universal Group, ORS Infrastructures, Iris Abode Pvt Ltd, and RPS.

?
QUICK BYTES?

In the last two decades of development, most of the space in Old Gurgaon has been exhausted, prompting developers to go further down along NH-8 to construct building projects

Ray Bradbury: Why NASA named Curiosity landing site after SciFi writer

Ray Bradbury is the new name for the Mars rover landing site in the Gale Crater. NASA chose Ray Bradbury to honor the iconic writer's legacy and dedication to Mars exploration, NASA officials said.

NASA began a new chapter of its Martian chronicle Aug. 22 when the agency named its Mars rover Curiosity's landing site after the late science fiction author Ray Bradbury.

Curiosity's landing site inside Mars' vast Gale Crater was rechristened "Bradbury Landing"? to honor the iconic writer's legacy and dedication to Mars exploration, NASA officials said.

?Ray Bradbury?died in June at age 91. His first book, "The Martian Chronicles," paints a vivid picture of the human exploration of Mars through a series of short stories. The book was published in 1950 and later adapted into a TV series and video game.

"Today would have been Ray Bradbury's 92nd birthday, but he's already reached immortality in his short stories and books," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program. "His books have truly inspired us. His 'Martian Chronicles' has inspired our curiosity." [More photos of Bradbury Landing on Mars]

The Mars rover Curiosity landed on Aug. 5 inside Gale Crater to determine if the area could have ever supported microbial life. The site of Bradbury Landing is the space contained within the first boxy wheel marks made by Curiosity as it was lowered to the Martian surface by its sky crane descent stage, Meyer said.

Curiosity took its?first test drive on Mars Wednesday, rolling forward, then turning in place and photographing its tracks on the Red Planet.

"I kind of like the name. For one, it was the majority vote by the science team, having been inspired by Ray Bradbury," Meyer added. The name also is a nod to the era of ocean exploration on Earth that took adventurers to many new lands, he added.

?NASA has a long tradition of naming landing sits on Mars after scientists and other icons related to space exploration or the Red Planet.

"Since sending the first rover to Mars in 1997, NASA has made it a tradition to name its landing sites after visionaries and explorers who devoted their lives to expanding our boundaries," said Robert Pearlman, editor of the space history website collectSPACE.com and SPACE.com contributor.

8 worst Windows 8 annoyances; how to fix them

23 hrs.

All new?operating systems have a learning curve, but due to its unique blend of new and old interfaces, Windows 8?s is particularly steep. Whether it?s a menu system that forces you change screens to launch an app or a pair of dueling control panels that each contain different settings, you often have to work harder to perform the same tasks as in Windows 7. Though you can?t solve all these issues on your own ? the Start button is gone for good ? you can make the most of Windows 8 with these tips.

1. No more Start menu

Multitasking in Windows 8 is like dating Sybil. Because there's no more Start menu, users are encouraged to leave the desktop environment and go to the Modern UI Start screen, just to launch other desktop apps that take you right back to the desktop. Not only does switching screens take more time than simply launching a menu, it takes you out of context by pushing your work in the first application off-screen, making it easy to lose track of what you were doing.

Fortunately, there are several ways to avoid going through the Start screen to launch desktop apps. You can install a third-party Start menu, create keyboard shortcuts or pin applications to the taskbar.

2. Switcher Groups All Desktop Apps Into Just One Thumbnail

If?you want proof that desktop applications are second-class citizens in Windows 8, look no further than the Switcher menu where you'll find separate thumbnails for all of your open Windows 8 applications. The entire desktop gets just one thumbnail, though, no matter how many different programs are running on it.

if you want to find to a program that's running on the desktop, you must navigate from the Switcher menu back to the desktop and look at the windows or taskbar there, a huge waste of time and mental energy.

The good news is that you can switch between all of your tasks using the good old-fashioned ALT Tab key combination. Also, if you dock the desktop next to your primary app in the Metro UI, you'll see a list of tiles representing all of your open desktop apps.

3. You Must Slide Away the Lock Screen Before Logging In

Sometimes it seems like Windows 8 was designed to make orthopedists rich, because the new OS asks PC users to perform so many unnecessary clicks and mouse gestures. The most blatant waste of time and muscle movement is caused by the cutesy lock screen that you must close by either dragging it offscreen or clicking on it (the faster method) every time you boot or wake your computer.

Tablet users may like to see the weather and time when their devices are inactive, but on PCs, the display is nothing more than a giant roadblock that stands between you and your login prompt.

Fortunately, you can make the lock screen disappear permanently. Just enable the "Do not display lock screen" setting in the under Computer Configuration > Administrative Tools > Control Panel > Personalization in the Local Group Policy editor.

Read More: How to Disable the Windows 8 Lock Screen: Step-by-Step

4. The Power Button is One Gesture and Three Clicks Away

Since Microsoft designed Windows 8 with the world of always-on tablets in mind, the company thinks you'll need to shut down and restart so rarely that these functions are buried in the menu structure. In Windows 7, the Shut Down button is displayed prominently on the Start menu, whereas in Windows 8, the suggested method is to pull out the Charms menu, click the Settings charm, click the Power button and then select Shut Down from a menu.

If you don't have time and shoulder muscles to waste, you can create your own shortcuts for both the Shut Down and Restart functions. Just assign the shortcuts to the command-line commands "shutdown /s /t 0" (shutdown) and "shutdown /r /t 0" (restart), respectively. Be sure to pin these shortcuts to the Start screen and taskbar for easy access.

5. Windows Mail Doesn't Support POP Accounts

Many ISPs give users POP email accounts, but Windows 8's built-in mail app not only doesn't support POP connections, it actively disses POP users. The first time you open Windows Mail, if the program doesn't recognize your login email address as Outlook or Hotmail.com, it asks you if that address is POP, IMAP or Exchange. If you select POP, it rudely tells you that Mail doesn't support POP3 accounts and that you should get an IMAP or Exchange account instead.

You can, of course, use a different mail client, but if you want to stick with Windows Mail there's a simple solution. Set up your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Gmail account to check your POP mail and then add that account to Windows Mail. In Outlook.com, the option to send/receive mail from a POP account is listed under the More Mail Settings menu.

6. Secondary Users Cannot Install Applications

One of Windows 8's selling points is its ability to handle multiple users. However, when you add users to your Windows 8 device, by default they aren't given permission to install desktop software on their own. Though they can install Windows 8 Metro-style apps to their heart's content, secondary users are asked for an administrator's password as soon as they launch a desktop installer.

Even after an administrator enters his or her password, Windows 8 installs the program but, in our experience, fails to put a shortcut on the secondary user's desktop, on the Start screen or on the All Apps menu. The only way for the secondary user to launch his new app is to find its .exe file in the Program Files folder and create a shortcut from that. Don't try that at home.

Fortunately, it's fairly easy to grant administrative privileges to a secondary user, provided that you know which menu to use. After adding a user in the PC settings menu, go into the desktop control panel and click Manage Another Account, select the name of the new account and then click Change Account Type and select Administrator from the menu.

7. Tablet Users Need to Enter the Desktop for Key Functions

Though Microsoft focused the Modern UI on touch, it still forces users back to the desktop for such basic operations as file management and controlling the screen resolution or the user permissions (see annoyance #6). So any time a tablet user attaches a USB flash drive and wants to copy files from it, he will need to use Windows Explorer on the desktop.

Microsoft should have made all of its built-in apps ?? especially Windows Explorer and Control Panel ?? work in Modern UI, but tablet users can address this problem by making the icons on their desktop as large and finger-friendly as possible. Simply right click on the desktop, select Screen Resolution, click "Make text and other items larger or smaller" and adjust as necessary.

8. ?Bing Search App Opens Results in Another App

With its vibrant photographs of landscapes and its image-heavy tile results, Microsoft's built-in Bing Search app provides a more attractive interface for performing Web searches than you'll find elsewhere. Unfortunately, behind the attractive facade lurks a really annoying usability problem. When you see a result you like and click on it, the Bing app sends you to Internet Explorer to view the page.

Since both Bing and IE 10 run fullscreen, some users may not notice that they have switched apps, so they'll be really confused when they hit the back button in the browser, only to find out that it does not return them to the list of Bing results. To get back where they came from, users will have to switch back to the Bing app.

The easy way to avoid this problem is to pin the Bing (or Google) websites to your Start screen and use the browser, rather than the Bing app, for all your searching needs. If you feel compelled to use the dedicated Bing app, you can dock it to the right so you can see your list of results on the side of the screen while Internet Explorer takes up most of the space.

Legal Firms Adopt ShoreTel's VoIP-UC Platform | CRM Daily

ShoreTel Relevant Products/Services is touting the advantages that law firms can derive from the deployment of the company's on-premises VoIP Relevant Products/Services platform with integrated unified communications (UC Relevant Products/Services) capabilities.

"ShoreTel is simple to manage and law firms don't need to hire external support," a company spokesperson said Thursday. "This saves law firms money over the life of the system."

The company's on-premises technology also can be easily customized, which results in better time management and tracking --- criteria which are critical to the legal industry, said Shoretel Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Gavin.

"Without it, the needs of a client can be jeopardized and customer satisfaction threatened," Gavin said.

Some legal professionals like having traditional phones on their desktops while others prefer to use instant messaging and "soft" phones. But having disparate communications systems really limits what capabilities can be introduced, is too expensive and also hard to maintain, said David Michel, CIO at the law firm of Burr & Forman, which has offices throughout the South.

"We wanted an easier approach to share information -- especially for lawyers who travel to depositions, hotels, meetings, and such," Michel said. "We chose ShoreTel for its ease of use, simplicity, total cost of ownership, disaster recovery Relevant Products/Services, and cost savings."

'Strong Positive' Rating

ShoreTel was the only top-tier business VoIP phone system vendor to gain a "strong positive" rating in Gartner's latest report covering UC platforms for small- and medium-size businesses in North America. By contrast, Shoretel rivals Avaya, Cisco, Interactive Intelligence and Mitel received positive ratings, whereas Alcatel-Lucent, Digium, Microsoft Relevant Products/Services, NEC, Siemens Enterprise Communications and Toshiba were rated as promising.

"The vendor ratings speak for themselves," said Gartner Research Director Jay Lassman.

Overall, ShoreTel has designed a solution that effectively addresses IT Relevant Products/Services-constrained organizations' needs for easy-to-use, easy-to-manage and easy-to-implement communications solutions.

"The user, administration and implementation simplicity as well as the inherently redundant architecture of ShoreTel 13 is well-suited for most SMBs' UC needs and resource limitations," wrote Lassman and the new report's co-author, Megan Marek Fernandez. "ShoreTel's architecture offers the SMB Relevant Products/Services market the same inherent redundancy that is used by large customers." (continued...)

New Sheetz distribution center could bring 250 jobs to Burlington

BURLINGTON, N.C. ? A popular convenience store chain is considering Burlington as the site of a new distribution center.

If the city and county agree to the requested incentives, the company may invest millions of dollars into the community and create more than 250 jobs.

Sheetz, the hi-tech convenient store chain that offers made to order foods, is interested in opening a distribution center in Burlington.?

Sheetz has asked for more than $1 million worth of incentives and infrastructure from both the city and Alamance County. If the concessions are made, Sheetz promises to invest more than $32 million?into the area.

?They?ve still got options. We?re option A, if you will. We need to finish everything we?ve been talking about for option A to be the ultimate choice,? said Mac Williams, President of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce.

According to Williams, the company is also considering another location.? The competing location was not confirmed, but Williams said it was probably in Virginia.

County, city officials and the company are taking everything in consideration regarding the proposed distribution center. Each party has to make sure the decisions being made are the right ones.

?It?s an important [decision] because of who it is, what they do, the sector that they?re in, their future growth,? said Williams, who has been working on the project for almost a year.

The company?s public relations manager Monica Jones said they want to build 30 new stores in the next year, most of those in North Carolina. With a distribution center in Burlington, the company can stock stores throughout the south.

?It?s just a very growing area of the country? pretty dynamic. So far, the communities we?ve served in North Carolina have been great to us. Since we?re expanding farther south it just seemed like the next logical step for us,? said Jones.

The proposed food distribution center would be the chain?s second hub. The other is located in Pennsylvania.

If Burlington is chosen, the distribution center could be built on land off White Kennel Road.

William said the company will make a decision shortly after a public hearing set for Sept. 4.

University of Michigan connects 3,000 cars for yearlong safety pilot

Road safety continues to be a major concern for both researchers and car makers alike. Yesterday saw yet another real-world trial kicking off, this time on a much grander scale. A total of 3,000 vehicles in Ann Arbor, Michigan are taking part in a 12-month project run by the state's Transportation Research Institute. The vehicles have Dedicated Short Range Communications and video recording facilities, which means the cars can communicate with each other, traffic signals, and share data to a central platform -- which in turn issues warnings when high risk situations, or if traffic problems occur. Of course, this trial will also create a massive data set, which researchers will be able to plunder, and help the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) better determine the viability of such systems. So while it's unlikely to lead to self driving cars just yet, it's a step in the right direction.

NPD: 18% Of Consumers Watch Online Video Daily On TVs; China?s Urbanites Watch The Most Of All

Online video ? helped along by the rise of tablets, better broadband and a flood of content from YouTube, Netflix, Amazon and many others ? has seen a huge rise in usage in the last few years; and while PCs remain the most common way to consume it, thanks to consoles like the Xbox, even TV screens are becoming popular for online video consumption.

According to a new study out from NPD surveying 14,000 consumers across 14 countries, some 18% of users are accessing online video on TVs on a daily basis, with some 25% accessing it several times a week, with movies driving much of that growth.

Similarly, it noted that tablets and smartphones are also continuing to see more usage for online video. The fact that overall PCs have a higher penetration than tablets may be the reason why PCs ? both laptop and desktop ? still prove more popular than tablets and smartphones as a place to watch online video. But as we have seen before, when people do have tablets, some are actually spending more time watching video on them than they are PCs, by as much as 30% more.

China ? urban China, that is ? is coming out as the most online-video-friendly country at the moment. As you can see in the table below, which measures online video consumption in different countries by device, China?s urban users beat every other country surveyed, across every device. This may be down to simple user behavior, but it?s also, NPD says, because Chinese users can access a lot more video content online than they can from domestic broadcasters and pay-TV providers.

Going back to the bigger picture, the rise in online video watching on TV is not exclusively because people are buying fancier televisions with internet built into them; also playing a role are the consoles that they are attaching to their existing sets. Products like the Xbox or set-top boxes from pay-TV providers that link up with broadband-enabled on-demand services have propelled TV into a strong category for online video, especially in particular markets.

In Mexico, some 30% of users watch online video on TVs. Among urban parts of China the number is nearly 40%. Neither still reaches the number of people watching on PCs ? 52% on laptops and 73% on desktop PCs, respectively ? but it is getting close.

?Online content is mostly viewed on computers or mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones, but TVs are increasingly becoming devices of choice for consumers, particularly since an increasing numbers of sets have either built-in connectivity or can be connected to the internet via a peripheral device such as a connected Blu-ray player or set top box, among others,? noted NPD DisplaySearch research director Riddhi Patel in a statement.

NPD says films are the most popular online video on TVs, overtaking TV content.

But, lest you think the whole world is getting connected, think again. NPD says that 44% of viewers have ?no interest? in content on TVs; a further 30% said they do not own the equipment to watch online video.

And even if they were given the tools to watch online video on TV, only one-third of those without the possibility to do so now say they would want to.?Within individual countries, India ranked the highest among those with ?no? online video viewing options, at 67%. But it?s not just an emerging market story: Japan was the second-highest market in the no-online-video game, at 42%.

Prosecutor hopes to stir debate on Ill. gun laws

(AP Photo/The Pantagraph, David Proeber)

(AP) ? Despite a statewide ban on concealed weapons, gun owners in one central Illinois county don't need to worry about facing charges because its top prosecutor is refusing to enforce a law he considers unconstitutional.

Illinois is the only state that still bans residents from carrying concealed guns. McLean County State's Attorney Ronald Dozier calls the law antiquated and said Wednesday that he hopes his policy against prosecuting harmless violations will send a message.

"I felt like I just wanted to make a statement to the Legislature," said Dozier, a retired judge who was appointed state's attorney in December and plans to step down in October.

And legal experts say he's completely within his rights.

As a prosecutor, Dozier has the power to decide which cases he will and won't pursue, though it was unusual to publicly announce that a whole class of offenses is off the table, American University law professor Angela Davis said.

Also rare is basing that decision on the prosecutor's own opinion that a law is invalid, she said.

"I'm not saying it's never been done, but it's certainly not common," said Davis, author of "Arbitrary Justice: The Power of the American Prosecutor."

Dozier believes many state's attorneys have privately decided not to pursue charges against people who violate some of Illinois' gun laws, such as failing to properly store a gun or allowing their state-issued Firearm Owners Identification Card to expire.

But he said he decided to tell the public about his policy ? and make clear that it extends to violations of the law against carrying a concealed weapon ? to encourage changes in state law.

The governor isn't pleased and suggested that Dozier abide by his oath of office.

"You have a duty to respect the law," Gov. Pat Quinn, a Chicago Democrat, said Wednesday. "If you don't agree with the law, we have procedures where you can challenge the law properly."

But a fellow Democrat who supports legalizing concealed carry, Rep. Brandon Phelps of Harrisburg in southeast Illinois, predicted that state's attorneys in areas like his where guns are popular will now face pressure to follow Dozier's lead.

"A lot of voters in those areas, especially at town hall meetings, are going to say, 'What's your position on what the McLean County state's attorney did?'" Phelps said.

Dozier, who also served as McLean County state's attorney from 1976 to 1987, said he is not urging anyone to carry a weapon or break the law. Police in the area say they will continue to arrest people if they see violations.

But in a four-page statement Tuesday, Dozier argued that state laws on where and how people can carry guns are unconstitutional under recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings.

People have the right to carry a concealed gun if they aren't disruptive or threatening, he said. A trucker passing through Illinois with a pistol under his seat shouldn't face felony charges, and a widow who inherits her husband's guns shouldn't be arrested for not having a Firearm Owners Identification Card, Dozier said.

The prosecutor said his decision to drop such cases is "absolutely parallel" to President Barack Obama administration's decision not to pursue deportation of certain young illegal immigrants with strong ties to the United States.

Dozier said he would decide whether charges are appropriate by asking several questions about each case, such as whether the gun was actually displayed, whether the owner was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and whether the owner has a criminal record or gang background.

That's where prosecutorial discretion gets tricky, said Davis, the law professor. Prosecutors can't possibly pursue charges in every case, but they must make sure decisions don't wind up being based on the wrong factors, such as class or race, she said.

"Whenever there is discretion, there is the possibility of unwarranted discrimination," Davis said.

The Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence condemned Dozier's "reckless" decision. Executive Director Colleen Daley said Dozier should run for the General Assembly and work to change the law if he thinks it's unconstitutional.

But the state's attorney in southeast Illinois' Edwards County praised Dozier's announcement. While stopping short of adopting a broad policy, Mike Valentine said he is unlikely to press charges over minor violations of gun laws.

State's attorneys as a group haven't taken any position on Dozier's action or the issue of legalizing concealed carry, said Matt Jones, associate director of the state Office of the State's Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor. He said it's long been established that each county prosecutor has almost complete discretion on how to use the office's limited time and money.

"Ultimately, the check on that is the voters who can vote them out of office," Jones said.

Microsoft shifts Xbox LIVE on Windows Phone branding

With yesterdays release of Shoot 1UP, Microsoft seems to be officially shifting the branding of all Xbox LIVE titles from ?Xbox LIVE? to ?Xbox Windows Phone?, possibly marking a shift in how the company see?s the handheld phone games fitting into the Xbox ecosystem.

The change comes on the same day as the company announced Windows Phone 8?s support of the Unity gaming engine, so sue us for getting a little excited. ?Sure it?s all a little murky and could add up to the same vision we?ve been seeing so far, but to be honest we?re less excited for a continuation of the me-too titles coming from the current program and more excited about the possibility of Microsoft making good on it?s assertions that Windows Phone is their ?mobile platform for games?.

Innovative products of excellent quality and high functionality, reliability, and customer-oriented service determine the success of the company that is one of the leading enterprises of the pet branch.

In 2009, Karlie was integrated into the newly founded Pet Products Group GmbH (PPG), which also includes the company Flamingo NV in Belgium and its own production sites in Eastern Europe and China, among others. Due to this merger, the customers now have access to the know-how and the bundled strengths of the companies. Worldwide, 1,500 employees work at PPG and Karlie for the well-being of the animals and humans.

Karlie offers its customers an assortment of high-quality products including over 8,000 items for dogs, cats, small animals, birds, fish and even horses, which is also consistently optimised in cooperation with the customers, in order to meet the demands of animals and owners at all times. The location in Bad W?nnenberg-Haaren also incorporates its own factory where the hand-made high quality leather goods are produced. The selection of the leather is decisive for the quality of the final product: Karlie exclusively uses hand-selected, naturally tanned skins of German free-range cattle.

The employees provide their extensive knowledge about the animals, their needs and the complex relationship between humans and animals on a daily basis, so that the customers can in turn be successful with their own customers with these concepts, innovative and sustainable products, along with comprehensive service.
