A man was killed Wednesday when a bicycle was involved in a collision with an Olympics shuttle bus just outside the site of the Games in London, police said.
An AFP reporter saw a man's legs protruding from under the double decker bus on a slip road outside the Olympic Park and his mangled racing bicycle lay nearby.
A group of around 30 soldiers who had been carrying out security duties at the park ran over to the scene, where traffic soon built up causing long tailbacks.
The Metropolitan Police said they were called to the scene at 7.42pm (1842 GMT).
"The cyclist, a man believed to be approximately 30 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene at 20.14 (1914 GMT)," police said in a statement.
The incident happened just outside the perimeter of the Park behind the Riverbank Arena, where a men's hockey match between Pakistan and Argentina was taking place at the time.
The scene was cordoned off with police tape, while the soldiers put up black screens around the site and a blue tent was erected next to the bus.
Troops, police, security staff and Games volunteers were at the site, while ambulances, police cars and fire engines were seen leaving the scene.
The collision is being investigated by the police's traffic investigation unit.
The shuttle buses -- generally London double deckers -- ferry the thousands of journalists covering the Games between the Olympic Park in Stratford in the east of the capital and hotels in central London.
The organisers of the Games were not immediately available for comment.
